Follow Me Back to School on Your Bike, Urges Larry
Irish Independent, February 27, 2004

U2's Larry Mullen is to go back to driving school after almost three decades on the road with his Harley Davidson.
The drummer admitted yesterday he never had formal training and was going back to learn.
Larry was just 16 when he got his provisional license and started riding bikes.
"I went into town, bought a bike and just got on it," he said yesterday. "When I think back now, I wonder how I could have been so stupid. People just don't have the basic training. Anyone can buy a bike and ride away with it without any sort of training. I just hope that by doing this, someone will listen and decide to do training before getting on a bike. It's not a cool thing to get on a bike. It's not cool to take your life into your hands. It is a dangerous undertaking that can get you killed."
Larry was launching the booklet This Is Your Bike by the National Safety Council and the Irish Motorcyclists' Action Group (MAG) sponsored by Hibernian General Insurance.
Shocking figures released yesterday by the National Safety Council show 70pc of bikers have never received basic riding lessons yet 40pc have been involved in a road crash.
So far this year, five motorcyclists have died, while 49 died last year as well.
And in the 10 years to 2002, 504 motorcyclists were killed and 11,188 injured.
